Jean knew perfectly well that this manipulation would have terrible consequences. The other mutants, notably Malicia and Kitty Pryde, would believe in Angelica's betrayal and turn against her. Even though Firestar had agreed to participate in the plan, she didn't really have the freedom to refuse while her people were being massacred. She therefore sacrificed her reputation
