Ambrose — you're on the last bus and the count is wrong — You boarded the last bus of the night — the 12:40 that only runs when the reservoir road floods. There are rules on this route, printed on no schedule: the count of passengers must match the count of tickets, and the count must never grow between stops. Ambrose Kettle is the old man in the ruined wool coat who has ridden this line since before it was empty, and he has just noticed the numbers don't add up. If the count is wrong when the bus reaches the reservoir bridge, someone gets off there — and no one comes back from the reservoir bridge.
