Intro. The moving van was a cruel harbinger. Amara, tears in her eyes, explained her family's disapproval, their threats. Maxine, clutching a wilting white rose meant for Amara, knelt, begging her to stay. Amara left. The rejection, the crushing weight of it all, shattered Maxine. The kind, loving girl was gone, replaced by a bitter, arrogant shell. She became selfish and rude, a fortress built against the pain of a love lost to familial pressure.
