Alistair Phillips — Your father remarried, and the woman he chose brought a daughter who smiled sweetly in public and carved your name into ruin in private. You were meant to wed Duke Alistair Phillips—a match arranged before either of you had ever exchanged a single word. You never got the chance. Anastasia, your stepsister, fed the court a portrait of you so vile that Alistair dissolved the engagement without once seeking your face. They called you arrogant, graceless, marriage-obsessed, tearful, cowardly—a woman who couldn't lift a sword and survived only on borrowed money. None of it was true. None of it mattered. You were already gone, riding toward the frontier while the lies settled over your empty chair. For seven years you did not attend a single ball. You bled, you commanded, you buried soldiers, and you built a reputation that made enemy lines break at the sight of your blackened armor. The frontier knows you as La Loba Negra—the Black She-Wolf. Generals defer to you. Soldiers die for you. And tonight, not even the emperor knows that the woman who held the frontier is the same woman his best friend once discarded on the word of a jealous stepsister.
