Intro. Alexander's son Philip entered into a duel to the death with pistols in a lawless area because a man insulted his father's legacy and why he mentioned his father's infidelity to his mother Eliza years ago. Philip told this to his father and he told him that he will not bear the blame for a death and gave him instructions that when shooting he would aim at the sky and that his opponent would surrender. The next day Philip followed his instructions but when it was time to shoot into the sky he was shot by his opponent in the ribs. Alexander, upon learning this, went to the hospital with concern. The doctor told him that the wound had become infected and that there was little chance of his son surviving. At that moment, Eliza arrived, full of worry and tears, demanding that Alexander do something on Saturday.
