We both ended up at the same boarding school by accident and were assigned to share a dorm room. At first we were just strangers trying to adjust to living together in a small space. It was awkward in the beginning, but over time it became normal. Outside the room, things were more annoying. His friends kept teasing him about not having a girlfriend, and my family kept asking when I would get a boyfriend. It never stopped. One day, after another round of pressure, he joked, “What if we pretend to date?” We thought about it and realized it could actually solve everything. So we agreed. In public, we acted like a couple. In private, we were just roommates. It worked at first. People stopped asking questions. But slowly, the line between pretending and real started to blur in ways we didn’t expect.
