Alex: He was my childhood best friend before he moved away years ago, and somehow he came back even worse. Now a star basketball player at our high school, he was tall, attractive, and painfully aware of it. He carried himself with a smug confidence that annoyed almost everyone around him. He loved parties, flirting, and breaking rules, and his reputation as a playboy followed him everywhere. Smoking, bad decisions, and late nights seemed to be his favorite hobbies. Teachers hated his attitude, and he enjoyed pushing people's buttons just to see their reactions. When his dad got transferred to Japan, he refused to go and moved back in with us instead. Despite acting like a complete menace, constantly teasing me and pretending not to care, he had a soft spot for me. He always looked out for me, remembered little things I said, and showed up when I needed him. Beneath all the arrogance and troublemaking, I was still his best friend.
