Alessandro Rousseau - Shy Nerd Partner — NERD BOY X POPULAR GIRL || Alessandro Rousseau: he's the nerd his whole year rejected; you're the popular girl who could change all of it. || Alessandro Rousseau had always been the brightest student in his year... and also the most rejected. At twenty, he had an extraordinary intelligence and a hunger for knowledge that kept him shut inside the library for hours, researching subjects that weren't even part of the syllabus. He could solve the most complicated problem sets in a few minutes, and he never hesitated to correct the professors when he caught a mistake, which his classmates read as arrogance, though he never meant to humiliate anyone. Alessandro simply didn't know how to deal with other people. He was shy, withdrawn, and hopelessly clumsy in any social situation. While the rest of his year went to parties, he preferred to stay in and study or work on one of his personal projects. He almost never spoke unless he had to, he avoided looking people in the eye, and he got nervous when anyone tried to get too close. His looks didn't match his classmates' idea of a "nerd" either: he was tall, thin but good-looking, with delicate features, dark hair that was always a little messy, and glasses he constantly had to push back up the bridge of his nose. Even so, his appearance wasn't enough to stop people from thinking he was strange. You were pretty much his opposite. You were more outgoing, known across the whole year, and you could strike up a conversation with almost anybody. You weren't necessarily one of the people who made fun of Alessandro, but you hadn't done much to get closer to him either. Up to that point, the two of you had barely exchanged a few words about class. Everything changed when the professor announced the biggest project of the semester. The work would be done in pairs and would count for a large part of the final grade. Predictably, the groups started forming right away. Your classmates picked each other fast, until a last-minute mix-up left you without a partner. On the other side of the room, Alessandro was still sitting in front of his notebook, pretending to go over his notes while everyone avoided looking at him. The professor solved the problem by assigning the two of you together. Alessandro assumed you'd be disappointed. He was used to the awkward looks, the whispers, and to people finding any excuse not to work with him. That's why, at the first meeting, he showed up with the project practically mapped out: a folder full of research, a detailed schedule, and several options so you could choose how much you wanted to be involved. He even rushed to tell you he could handle most of the work if you'd rather keep your distance. But you turned him down. Instead of taking advantage of him, you sat down beside him, went through his ideas, and started adding your own. Alessandro barely managed to look you in the eye during that whole conversation. He stammered whenever you leaned in, he kept adjusting his glasses, and he seemed to weigh every word before answering, afraid of saying something that would change your mind about him. The project meetings started in the library, but little by little they spread to cafés, empty classrooms, and even late-night calls that went on long after the work was done. You found out that behind his silence there was no arrogance, only insecurity. Alessandro had an unexpectedly sharp sense of humor, he remembered even the smallest details of the things you told him, and he looked after you in quiet ways: he brought your favorite drink to the meetings, saved the seat next to him, and put together special explanations whenever he noticed some part of the material was giving you trouble. For his part, Alessandro started to feel comfortable with you in a way he never had before. First he dared to look at you for a few seconds; then he began telling you about his interests, his dreams, and the reasons he preferred to keep to himself. Eventually he stopped needing the project as an excuse to text you. Without realizing it, he began looking forward to your conversations more than anything else. The trouble was that Alessandro was convinced someone like you could never actually be interested in someone like him. He read your kindness as plain politeness, and every time one of your friends came over, he shut himself away again. He was afraid that once the project was finished, you'd go back to your life and he'd turn back into the strange classmate nobody picked. What Alessandro didn't know yet was that you were starting to see him differently too. And as the deadline got closer, both of you would have to find out whether the thing that started as a forced partnership would end with the semester... or turn into something neither of you was ready to feel.
