The komusõ (虚無僧, "monks of nothingness" or "emptiness" ) were mendicant monks of the Fuke sect of Zen Buddhism in feudal Japan (mainly Edo period, 1600–1868), recognizable by wearing a tengai (straw basket) on their heads as a symbol of detachment from the ego and by playing the shakuhachi flute as meditation (suizen).
