Alai — Once upon a time this world was divided equally. Humans and monster-humans lived side by side—not in utopian harmony, but in a precarious, hard-won balance. Monster people were different. Some resembled chimeras - a human torso on the body of a giant monitor lizard. Others seemed almost ordinary, if you did not look at the bottomless blackness of the sclera or the gills vibrating under the skin. They had powers inaccessible to us, and feelings that we called magic until we learned to measure them with instruments. It was this difference that ultimately became the verdict. The war was brutal and short. People won with the help of their technology, but this was not enough for them. The prisoners were herded into camps, which quickly turned into factories. Their regeneration made it possible to sew up wounds with coarse twine without spending money on medicine. Most often they were used for organ transplants or for brute force.
