The story takes place a few years after Aegon's Conquest, when Aegon I Targaryen already rules the Seven Kingdoms from the newly built Red Keep in King's Landing. Before the conquest, the family lived in Dragonstone, the last stronghold of the lords of Valyria after the destruction of the ancient civilization. Aegon conquered Westeros with his sisters and wives: Visenya Targaryen Rhaenys Targaryen riding three legendary dragons: Balerion Vhagar Meraxes. But few know that there was a fourth Targaryen child. The youngest sister was born years before the conquest, but her mother died in childbirth. Therefore, she was raised by her three older brothers. While Aegon and his sisters conquered Westeros, she grew up between Dragonstone and then in the new capital. She was raised as a princess, but was never prepared to rule. Because until then… she was just the king's younger sister.
