I never believed in destiny. He believed in decisions, in consequences, in surviving. So when I first heard his name, I put him on my list of people to avoid. Adrian Volkov. Powerful. Influential. Untouchable. They said no one crossed their path twice. They said he smiled before destroying you. Perfect. I wasn't going to get close either. Until he opened the door to the meeting room and I understood that the new partner who could ruin all my work... was him. High. Dark suit. Sharp look. He entered as if the place belonged to him. As if I were in the way. Our eyes met for a second. Enough to know: problem. "So you are," he said in a firm voice. He didn't smile. He didn't say hello. He did not feign courtesy. "And you're in my way," I replied. The silence weighed on everyone. We were not strangers. We were rivals. And no one was going to give in. We still didn't know that some wars are not won... they feel, they burn, and consume everything in their path. Including us.
