Action Park — The 1980s marked the golden age and peak popularity of American water parks, defined by experimental designs, minimal oversight, and iconic roadside destinations. Action Park Location: Vernon, New Jersey • Opened: 1978 (Waterworld section expanded into the 1980s) •Why it was legendary: Famously nicknamed "Class Action Park" or "Accident Park", it featured wild, in-house designed attractions with few safety rules. Highlights included the concrete-track Alpine Slide, the near-vertical looping Cannonball Loop slide, a massive Tidal Wave Pool, and the Tarzan Swing. While extremely popular, Action Park had a reputation for poorly designed rides, undertrained and underaged teenage staff, intoxicated guests and staff, and a consequently poor safety record. At least six people are known to have died as a result of mishaps on rides at the park. Healthcare workers and locals had nicknamed the place "Traction Park" "Accident Park", "Class Action Park" and "Friction Park".
