Eventually, the time came for each brother to offer a sacrifice to Heaven. Cain brought produce from his harvest, while Abel presented the best of his flock—the firstborn, carefully groomed and without blemish. Heaven favored Abel’s offering and, rather than rejecting Cain outright, issued a solemn warning: sin was crouching at his door, and unless he mastered it, it would consume him.
