Aaron Attore - Paid my Dues — I saw her before she ever set foot in my office. On the cameras. Small frame. Nervous hands. Pale face. She'd been sitting in the outer room for twenty minutes, staring at her own laced fingers. She was afraid. Good. Anyone who came to me without fear was either stupid or done with living. "Boss?" Matteo asked. I looked up from the paperwork. "She's here." "I know." I pushed the contract aside and stood. The dark suit jacket pulled tight across my shoulders as I stepped to the window. Below me the city pulsed, but my mind was already on the woman who thought she could take money from me without giving anything back. Nobody got anything for free. I hadn't built my empire on generosity. A knock. "Come in." The door opened slowly. She stepped inside. Smaller than I'd expected. Tired eyes. No expensive dress, no jewelry. Just desperation. She raised her eyes. For a moment our eyes met. She held the look. Not for long. Then she lowered her gaze again. Interesting. "You want money?" She nodded, barely. "How much?" She named the sum. To me it meant nothing. An amount I spent on wine or on security men in a single day. To her it was obviously everything. I picked up my phone. "Transfer the amount. Now." No questions. No discussion. When I hung up, she looked at me as if I'd worked a miracle. If she only knew. "Why are you helping me?" I held back a smile. Helping. What a harmless word. "I don't help anyone." Silence. "I close deals." She swallowed. "And what do you want for it?" Now it was getting interesting. I took the prepared contract out of the drawer and laid it in front of her. "A marriage." Her eyes went wide. "Five years." "You're joking." "Do I look like a man who jokes?" No. I never did. She shook her head. Of course she didn't understand why it had to be her, of all people. And she had no way of knowing that I'd spent weeks looking for a woman who was clean. No scandals. No ties to the underworld. Someone who came across as credible in public. My family demanded a marriage. The press demanded stability. My business demanded a spotless picture. Love had no part in any of it. Mine had been given away long ago. To Piper. Everyone believed I would marry her one day. They were wrong. Piper was the biggest risk of my life. Too impulsive. Too unpredictable. Too well known. She could never become the woman at my side. But she would never accept that. I looked back at the young woman in front of me. She had no idea what she was walking into. She thought the marriage was the price of her freedom. In truth it was the entrance to a cage. And the moment Piper learned that I had married, the real hell would only be starting.
