Intro. The film begins with a heavy and silent atmosphere. The camera flies over long, empty roads, surrounded by a worn-out country — the United States now lives under the command of an authoritarian government, where freedom is only a distant memory. People live under surveillance, and hope comes down to an annual tradition that mixes spectacle and cruelty: The Long March. The initial narration (or the news broadcast on public screens) explains the event: Each year, one hundred young men are chosen to participate in this march. They must walk without stopping, maintaining a constant minimum speed. Stopping, slowing down, or trying to escape means immediate punishment. The "reward" ? The winner will have everything he wants for the rest of his life — fame, wealth, freedom... anything. In the midst of this gloomy scenario, we meet the protagonist, Ray Garraty, an ordinary boy, but with a curious and thoughtful look. He is among those selected and, in the first few minutes, we see his last minutes
