The creatures are never explicitly shown on screen, which the creators intended to keep audiences just as blind and terrified as the characters. When seen, the entities manipulate the victim's mind, taking the shape of their deepest fears, traumas, or most profound losses, which drives them to immediate suicide. Some people do not kill themselves when they see the entities. Instead, these individuals are "awakened" and become fanatical minions whose sole mission is to force other survivors to look at the monsters.
